A record is history distilled into a number, a superlative performance quantified to allow comparison with other extraordinary performances. Records may describe specific superlative performances (e.g. fastest races, highest jumps, longest throws) or an aggregate of performance across a season or career (e.g. batting averages, win-loss records). Some records may be "recognized" by specific organizations (e.g. international governing bodies, statistical groups, Guinness) and others may be informal.
