Almost every sport has multiple aspects which can be analyzed statistically to produce data that can then be used as a predictor of future performance. Certain sports, such as baseball, have traditionally involved a wide array of statistics to evaluate player and team performance, such as batting average, on-base percentage, earned-run average, etc. Other sports such as american football are newer to this level of in-depth analysis, but with the advances in computer processing and data mining, interesting and often obscure statistics have been used by media to add additional trivia and interest to a sporting event in near real-time.
