When players arrive on court, they'll put down their bags and towels on seats to the umpire's left and right. Is there a rule that determines who sits where, or is it simply that the first player walking on picks a seat?

1Interesting question. ATP rules don't seem to say; the ITF rules specify how to decide which end they play from, but not where they sit. I'm guessing there is a rule, or at least an understanding (probably the higher seed gets to pick?) but not sure.– JoeCommented Sep 8, 2020 at 4:21

In the sport of tennis, the positioning of players' chairs in relation to the umpire is typically guided by practical factors rather than rigid regulations. The following are some important considerations:
- The orientation of the chair umpire is typically such that their back faces the sun, thereby minimizing glare. Consequently, the placement of the players' chairs is adjusted in accordance with this positioning. Source.
- The arrangement of the court features players' chairs positioned alongside the chair umpire, facilitating effective communication during changeovers. My source was the same.
- Tournament Details: Certain tournaments may feature particular configurations influenced by the design of the court or various logistical considerations. Different Source.
