Note that if you take stats from thousands of players you will have someone whose stats which are "exceptional", say... one in a thousand?

Why is Tony Gwynn an exception? .444 average over how mant at-bats?

"point dogs"? (we are not all american...)

"Association football comes much much earlier, and probably has some links to Rugby"?!? They come from a clarification / split of rules from the mid 1850s. They are twin brothers that followed their own way, that is much more than "some links" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_football)

@JeopardyTempest sure, I have no problem editing. But it was not a serious mistake plus the reply was very recent, so JW8 might still want to add something more.

"the NFLPA negotiates with the NFLPA" should probably be "the NFL negotiates with the NFLPA"?

Do you know if it changed recently? Say, within the last 20 years or so. Because I think I remember that players leaving the field to avoid off-side used to be praised, not cautioned. (if it changed it was a good change, I say)

I think the emphasis would be better at "including the player themself", other than that, this would also be my reply.

I guess they'll make a good pair as they are. A reply for the real qualifiers, a remark for the others :-)

I recall reading that Portugal, after failing to qualify, was asked to fill in the schedule, but declined the invitation. According to wikipedia so did France and Ireland. So, in a way all of them have declined after being able to play it, though not stricly after qualifying. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

Nice, thanks. And I agree it was a poor decision by the referee. As Brazil was taking their time to score the corner kick he could (should...) have stopped the game there. It does happen often enough not to be notable.

One famous (at least to me) example: World Cup 1978, group stage, Brazil-Sweden tied 1-1, Brazil has a corner kick at the very end of the match, they take their time, they shoot the ball, there is a header and goal! Or not... the referee had whistled for the end of the match while the ball was on flight from the corner. Controversial? Very! For sure. Nearly 40 years later it came to my mind immediately when I read the question :-) See it on YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=MDfV35ddpu0

That is something in which football (soccer) is different from football (of the "american" kind). There are no fixed positions - except maybe goalkeeper - so there is no concern about a "tight-end" swapping position with a "running back" or a "wide receiver" with the "quarter back"
